We suggest driving to i Pietrai, as there is little other alternative. However, the nearby
town of Cecina is easily reachable by train and from there it is a relatively short taxi ride.
To drive to I Pietrai you must refer to the Variante Aurelia, the main artery between
Grosseto (Rome) and Livorno (Pisa). This highway is numered SS1 Aurelia (or E80). From any point,
North or South, follow SS1/E80 up until the exit Cecina Centro.
The highway exit will bring you to a rotary, where you must carefully follow signs for Guardistallo (coming from the North, this is such that you will actually have to invert your direction). This is a map of the area around the highway exit (actually it is all very simple and straightforward). Shortly after, you will enter a second rotary (next to the Cecina Hospital) where the road towards Guardistallo will be clearly marked: this is route SP 57 (Strada Provinciale 57). Driving along SP57 you will begin to climb and arrive at the village of Guardistallo, after 7.6 km. When in view of Guardistallo, take a right turn onto Strada Provinciale SP28, so-called Strada dei Tre Comuni (Road of the 3 Villages), following signs towards Casale Marittimo. You will be coasting the village (without entering) for about 0.7 km. Bear right at the next intersection, and keep following SP28 towards Casale for about 600 m up until the intersection with the road to Canneto/Volterra (marked on your left). You have now arrived. Do not enter the road to Canneto but immediately on your right take the country road (unpaved) that will take you up the hill and, bearing right, to the Poggio ai Chiodi (visible on map left). The entrance to this road is marked by the sign "Poggio ai Chiodi". Note that, after leaving Guardistallo, we are the second unpaved road on your right, about 1 km before the village of Casale Marittimo (should you arrive there, you have to turn around). |
