Our property is immersed in a typical country landscape surrounded by forest and mediterranean shrubland, at a short distance from the sea (10 km) and at an altitude of about 300 m, next to the village of Guardistallo. This territory was originally submerged by the sea, and indeed for this reason that many of the stones you will find (including those on the house walls!!) carry visible signs of fossil shells. Il podere Poggio ai Chiodi, facing south, is situated in a desirable dominant position with a vast view on the sea and the plain around Cecina, the hills of Volterra and the charming village of Casale Marittimo. Given the moderate elevation, you can enjoy a natural, refreshing air breeze even on hot summer days. Moreover, from the hill, it is easy to spot the main islands of the Tuscan archipelago such as Elba, Capraia e Gorgona, while on exceptionally clear days you may distinctly see the mountains of the island of Corsica. Vegetation is dominated by Holm-oak, Oak, and Cypress trees, some of which are almost a centuty old. Our property also comprises Pine trees and a large Olive-tree orchard. Shrub vegetation includes bushes of fragrant Lavender, Broom, Rosmarine, but also Strawberry-tree and colorful Oleanders. Nearby (Bibbona) you may also find Cork-oak trees, grown for their characteristic bark. Wildlife is also abundant. Especially at night, and if armed with patience and a good torch-light, you may frequently encounter wild-boars, crested porcupines, red foxes , and land tortoises, as well as roe deer and badger. Amond brids, we have often seen the otherwise rare hoopoe, while, especially in summer, you often hear the strident sound of the little owl. The curious and colorful european bee-eater, dugs his tunnel-nests here, and you may often hear or see jays, nightingales, wood-peckers, pheasants and migratory birds such as song-thrushes. |
